“A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect act.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“Easter tells us of something children can’t understand, because it addresses things they don’t yet have to know: the weariness of life, the pain, the profound loneliness and hovering fear of meaninglessness.” – Frederica Mathewes-Green

“A rule I have had for years is: to treat the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal friend. His is not a creed, a mere doctrine, but it is He Himself we have.” – Dwight L. Moody

“God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” – Saint Augustine

“This Easter” is the only Easter any of us have. The ones before have passed. The world in which we live makes no promise of another next year.

Easter is the poster child for the Supernatural. The religious leaders of Israel reasoned among themselves that Jesus should die so they could preserve their high position over the people: “One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all! You’re not considering that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish’” (John 11:49-50 HCSB).

Satan celebrated his victory over the Creator at the Cross. Having earlier been booted from heaven (“I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash” Luke 10:18 HCSB) for his usurpery against his Creator, Satan reckoned that with the death of Jesus on the Cross his ownership of humanity and the world’s governments now lay beyond the grasp of God.

Jesus’ 12 closest confidants were in despair; Judas had already hanged himself over his betrayal of Jesus. A few of the common people quietly buried Jesus in a tomb.

Despite the many and varied religions in this world, there are but two kingdoms which underlie every religion’s claim of ownership upon humanity. One claim belongs to the Creator, whose credentials are beyond question. The other claim is that of another created being, whose pride led him to believe that his claim was superior to that claim asserted by the Creator. The world’s religions either worship the Creator, or they worship the usurper.

Last week I heard in church from the pulpit that school would be closed for “spring break.” No, school was closed for Easter, just as it was when I was a child and went to school. Easter became “spring break” because the usurper of this world became tired of being reminded of his spectacular failure at Easter.

Easter is the Supernatural, writ large across history. “According to the laws of legal evidence used in courts of law, there is more evidence for the historical fact of the resurrection of Jesus Christ than for just about any other event in history” (Harvard Law professor Dr. Simon Greenleaf).

The conflict between the Creator and the usurper is now on full display across the world. Both sides to the conflict invite you to join with them. The usurper extracts his salvation in our blood and tears. Jesus Christ, having already shed his own blood and tears on our behalf, beckons us simply to join us in his resurrected life and victory celebration.

What does the end of the age look like from God’s side of the veil?
