St. John receives the Revelation of Jesus Christ

  1. God’s Word is truth

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17)

  2. The Holy Spirit is the Author of Scripture

And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: "The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: (Acts 28:25)

  3. Scripture reveals God’s will for us and reveals sin in us

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet." (Romans 7:7)

  4. God’s Word is the means of faith, which is the means of salvation

For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:13-17)

  5. Scripture is God’s Word

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. (1 Cor. 2:12-13)

  6. Paul’s teaching, which we have in the New Testament, is of higher authority than angels

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:8)

  7. Scripture is accurate down to the words and grammar

Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, "And to offsprings," referring to many, but referring to one, "And to your offspring," who is Christ. (Galatians 3:16) [note: offspring vs. offsprings ]

  8. The Apostles established the doctrine of the Church as they received it from Christ

The household of God built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, (Ephesians 2:19, 20)

  9. Paul received his teaching from God not men, and he wrote it down for us

the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. (Ephes. 3:3-5)

  10. God’s Word came to us through human instruments

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11,12)

R.G.Excellent!

N.N.BSo what do you say to someone who has come from a church that teaches that every word in the Bible MUST be obeyed exactly the way that it is said; i.e. wearing a head-covering, not wearing jewelry or makeup, etc. I came to the point where I felt like I was more trying to be sanctified by my works rather than trusting in Jesus ALONE, and yet what ... See More they taught was indeed in the Word of God. So what do I do with that? This has been very confusing for me in trying to figure out what is required as far as obedience is concerned. I am not trying to be adversarial, I really would like to know what you have to say. I have a lot that I am still trying to work through.

E.L.G.Nicole: suggest you start by getting the Herman Who dvd from Wretched and also the John McArthur study bible. Watch the dvd, then read all the notes in the study bible. You'll have a better understanding of how to properly handle scripture.
E.J@NIcole: then it's time to find another church ^_^
